London Plasmonics Forum 2024
King’s College London successfully hosted the 10th London Plasmonics Forum on June 12th, 2024. This landmark event celebrated a decade of advancing plasmonic research and fostering collaboration within the scientific community.
Event Highlights
The forum, which has been a cornerstone of the plasmonics research calendar since 2015, once again drew over 100 participants from London, the United Kingdom, Europe, and beyond. Researchers and industry professionals gathered to engage in stimulating discussions and share the latest developments in the ever-expanding field of plasmonics.
Keynote Address
The event was headlined by a thought-provoking keynote address from Professor Thomas Ebbesen of USIAS & ISIS, University of Strasbourg. His talk, titled “Plasmons and other Species in the Polariton Tool Box – Past and Present,” provided a comprehensive overview of the field’s evolution and current state.
Spotlight on Early Career Researchers
Continuing its tradition of nurturing emerging talent, the forum featured presentations predominantly from early career researchers (ECRs). This focus underscored the event’s commitment to fostering the next generation of plasmonic researchers and provided a platform for fresh ideas and innovative approaches with talks from:
- Jonathan Bar David (University of Cambridge) discussed plasmonically-enhanced vibrational excitations of the stable Blatter radical.
- Tintu Kuriakose (University of Oxford) presented findings on plasmon enhanced photoluminescence emission in hybrid nanowires.
- Anton Bykov (King’s College London) shared insights on hot-electron dynamics in ultrathin gold.
- Anastasiia Zaleska (King’s College London) explored ultra-broad and reversible ENZ tunability in copper-based plasmonic metamaterials.
- Simão João (Imperial College London) presented a computational screening of Au nanoparticle shapes for efficient plasmo-catalysts.
- Johannes Rietbrock (Imperial College London) discussed tuning penetration depth in surface enhanced infrared spectroscopy.
- Mayela Romero-Gomez (National Physics Laboratory) addressed the challenges in imaging optical modes of Au-based plasmonic metasurfaces.
- Brian Tam (Imperial College London) presented on upscalable chemical vapour deposited photocatalysts enhanced with plasmonics.
- Gaurav Sapra (Panjab University Chandigarh, India) introduced triboelectric nanogenerators for biomedical devices.
Poster Session and Networking
A highlight of the event was the bustling poster session during the lunch break. This session provided an excellent opportunity for in-depth discussions and networking. The judging panel consisted of Dr Nina Meinzer from Nature Physics, Dr Rachel Won from Nature Photonics, and science journalist and editor Dr Anna Demming .
The poster winners were:
Gabreil Sanderson – University of Cambrige
Daria Panova – King’s College London
Diptiranjan Paital – King’s College London
Looking Ahead
As the 10th London Plasmonics Forum concluded, participants left with new insights, collaborations, and a reinvigorated enthusiasm for the field. The event’s success reaffirmed its position as a crucial platform for advancing plasmonic research and fostering scientific exchange. Plans are already underway for the 11th London Plasmonics Forum, with dates to be announced. The organisers encourage interested researchers and industry professionals to stay tuned for future announcements and opportunities to participate in this vibrant scientific community.
